Phaedrus praises this Eros as the most venerable and valuable god because he is the cause of all mankind's virtue and happiness. From Tophat: The Greek word eros was often used in the context of 'sexual passion or a strong desire for something.' Plato's Symposium: philosophers debate different forms of Eros: -Eros is the ancient god among men and gods, and thus, Phaedrus' Eros is linked to the kind of primeval god found in Hesiod's account of the protogenoi in the Theogony. American notion that lust without love is unfulfilling- Aphrodite and Anchises both feel shame after they have sex. Zeus causes Aphrodite to fall in love with a mortal (Anchises) and she lowers herself from her position as a goddess to have sex with him. Hestia, goddess of home and hearth, is also immune, showing that the lust of eros has the ability to destroy the family (home wrecker). Artemis is also immune because she is an untamed virgin goddess. Sources: Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite Evidence: Athena is immune to Aphrodite's powers, setting wisdom in opposition to eros and emotion.
